Heathrow Airspace And Future Operations Consultation

After digesting the considerable volume of consultation documentation CHATR, working closely with the Bedford Park Society, has drafted a guide response to help Chiswick residents respond to the latest Heathrow airspace consultation.

In addition to questions relating to a potential third runway the consultation has introduced the prospect of a significant number of new flights directly over Chiswick coming into effect from 2022. Heathrow wish to introduce these regardless of whether they are allowed to build a third runway. The majority of people affected would never previously have experienced being beneath a flight path and most are probably still completely unaware of the prospect. Heathrow predict a particular concentration of flights on these new flight paths (approximately one every three minutes) for scheduled arrivals between 6.00am and 7.00am. This means residents are likely to be woken up from 5.40am. The particularly detrimental impact on the area means it is vital that Chiswick residents make their voices heard by responding to this consultation to prevent what would otherwise have a devastating effect.

The Heathrow consultation is complex and we believe the options we have selected are the least damaging options for Chiswick.

Wherever possible we recommend that you adapt the response to reflect those issues about which you feel most strongly. This may mean that you amend some of the sections rather than all of them. However, if you don't have time to do this, it is more important to submit a response and if you wish, you can simply print off the guide response, sign it and send it to Heathrow (details below).

While efforts continue to challenge Heathrow’s proposals at the political level, it is vital that as many people as possible complete Heathrow's questionnaire to ensure that, in the event the proposals are implemented, the least damaging options for Chiswick residents are adopted. In a number of instances the options are equally undesirable but the consultation forces us to select the "lesser of two evils."

The deadline for responses is 11.55pm on Monday, 4 March 2019

You can submit response in three ways:

  1. Print, sign & complete your details on the final page. Post to FREEPOST LHR AFO CONSULTATION

  2. Attach your response to an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

  3. Complete the online questionnaire via Heathrow's website:www.heathrowconsultation.com

As a reminder:

  • Heathrow are proposing 18 – 25 new flights directly over Chiswick landing between 06.00am and 07.00am (one every 2.4 – 3 minutes) at very high decibel levels, likely to wake people up from 5.40am. Up to 40 further new flights over the remainder of the day directly over Chiswick are also proposed. Heathrow wishes to implement these from 2022 ie four years prior to the implementation of any new runway.
  • If a new runway is built, Chiswick would be even more significantly affected with incoming low-flying aircraft (at 2,000 - 3,000ft), 47 flights per hour (one every 1.5 minutes) and with all of the flights above the key 65-decibel level. There will be 17 departing flights per hour (one every 3.5 minutes), all above 65 decibels.

We encourage everyone - you, all your family, friends and neighbours - to submit your views.
